Everyday Spirituality in 3 Steps

I’ve been seeing this phrase bandied around and use it often myself, but what does it really mean? It means having a spiritual life that is one and the same with your ‘regular’ life – completely without separation. But how do you do that? Try on these three steps and see if things don’t get a whole lot simpler:

  1. Realize your life is already a spiritual practice – Spirituality isn’t a part time gig or something you only do sometimes, it’s the foundation for your entire life. So everything you do throughout your day contributes in one way or another to your spirituality. As such, it’s important that you make sure that nothing you do during your day is contrary to your spirituality. If part of your spiritual philosophy is that every tree is sacred and you work for a lumber company, these two things don’t really go together in a harmonious way and there should be some resolution there. Of course, conflicts like this can lead to wonderful things if you use your thinking cap! If you believe in gratitude, remember to say thank you.
  2. Keep it Simple – Spirituality doesn’t have to be complicated! It doesn’t have be ornate, intricate, or confusing, either! If there’s anything that should be simple about life, it should be spirituality. What is more simple than a connection between the physical and the spiritual? When you read a new exercise, really digest it. Why is this step being done, why was that mentioned? Is it trappings or is it essential? For example, meditation. They sell special seats for meditating, and incense and candles and music and books and guides and exercises…. While that stuff is nice, I can get away with throwing my feet on my desk and leaning back.
  3. Does is matter? – Is it relevant in your life? Just because it’s a spiritual practice doesn’t mean you have to do it! I have a series on Shapechanging happening on my blog, but if it doesn’t resonate with you and you aren’t seeing how you can use it in your life, then don’t worry about it. Put it in the back of your brain for later in case things change, but for now, don’t worry about it. Focus on those things that you can fit in now that resonate with you and will really add to your life and set the rest aside for later.

Spirituality should be simple. It’s one of the things that we have done as human beings all over the globe and all through time. If so many people in so many situations have been able to be spiritual, then surely you can, too!

Do you have any steps to add?
